To conclude our day we had fun tech challenge; who could make the longest worm with an A5 piece of paper? Well done to Blake our winner.
Welcome to Room 17's blog for 2016. We are a class of Year 3 and 4 learners and our teacher is Mrs Bronwyn Rotheram.

Mathy Enviro
Today was an Enviro Day with Mrs Daniel. Did you know that each Enviro Day includes a maths component? So as well as tending to our butterfly garden, identifying ways to be sustainable and comparing our eviro journey with Royal Road School, we also learnt how to create a picture graph to display data today. Can you see how many grasshoppers Kelly found in her garden?

Naomi taught us how to make an origami cube we could blow up like a balloon. It was tricky, but she helped us so well we were all successful. Thank you , Naomi, for being our first Teach the Teacher presenter.

Inquiry Learning
We have each chosen an Olympic athlete for our inquiry learning during August.
We discussed what we would ask them if they visited our class, because we want to know how you become a world champion.
We researched information about our athletes on the internet and by watching TV news coverage.
We learned to make notes of information we found.
We learned how to present our information in our own words.
Next week we will share our learning with others in our class.

Planting Trees for Survival
Today Room 17 and Mrs Daniel, with the help of Lynda from Auckland City Council, repotted TWO HUNDRED & FIFTY seedlings, as part of the Trees for Survival programme. The children were such enthusiastic and careful botanists.
Did you know Sunnyhills Senior School students have already repotted over 300 seedlings? We're looking forward to our tiny seedlings growing 30 cm in a year, then we'll be replanting them in a local reserve for our native fauna to enjoy.
What a fantastic project; a wonderful learning experience with a really positive environmental outcome.

Our lesson with Julian from the ASB was a lot of fun. We learned it's good to "Spend some for you, but save some too."

Enviro BreakOut with Mrs Daniel
On Friday morning the children in Room 17 discovered a mystery padlocked box in their room. Mrs Daniel said that the information they needed to start their new Enviro Schools project had been scattered across the school, and the code for the locked equipment box had been forgotten. Could Room 17 work together to solve the clues, find the facts and break the code? They were determined and seriously excited.
The children showed amazing team work and communication skills to discover the solutions and find all the key facts about plants hidden in the gardens. Back in the classroom everyone persevered to break the code and open the padlock. Great problem solving!
Inside the mystery box the children discovered the seeds, containers and other equipment they needed to launch an edible garden. They spent the rest of the day researching seed germination and planting up. Mrs Daniel can't wait to see how much their bean, sunflower & pumpkin seeds have grown, when she returns later in the term, for another fun enviro day.

Grandparents Visit.
What a great time we had today sharing stories with our wonderful grandparents. Reading and telling stories underpins the development of literacy for students. The children were engrossed in listening to you and enjoying every minute. Thanks so much for the time you give them and for coming in to school today.

A Week of Tests and Swimming
What a busy start to the year! It has been lovely to meet so many parents at our picnic and Three Way Conferences. The children are settling well to new routines and work harmoniously together. This week has involved a succession of written tests and I have been impressed with how carefully our students have listened and followed instructions.
